Platform News and Updates

Private encrypted messaging is here. UpScrolled has left the chat.

Your conversations belong to you. End-to-end encrypted chat (E2EE) is here, which means your messages can only be read by you and the people you’re messaging with.

The message you send a friend late at night. The group chat where plans get made. The conversation you’d never post publicly. You meant for those exchanges to be private. And we believe they should be.

Privacy should be built into every conversation from the start. With end-to-end encrypted chat, you can share, connect, and speak freely with the people who matter to you, confident that your conversations stay between you.

With end-to-end encryption, your messages are private by design. Nobody else can read them, not us, not anyone. Your private conversations can’t be accessed, altered, or intercepted by anyone outside the conversation. Protecting your privacy means more than keeping your messages secure. It also means your conversations will never be used to train AI.

What this means for you

End-to-end encryption is rolling out first on mobile in app version 1.10.0 for direct messages with more platforms to come. The first release supports text only.

Privacy isn’t just a promise about what we will or won’t do with your conversations. It’s control, put back where it belongs: with you. We can’t see the content of your private messages at all, only that a message was sent, and who you sent it to. That’s what private by design means.

What changes

Moving chat to end-to-end encryption comes with a few one-time changes. Here’s what to expect:

  • If you’re using an older version of UpScrolled, you’ll need to update the app before using the chat.
  • Your existing chat history won’t carry over. Once you update and switch to encrypted chat, all your previous chat messages up to that point will be permanently deleted.
  • Want to back up your messages to another device? You can do that. Just log into your messages through a second device, and they’ll be stored locally on that device as well. That second device will have access to those messages no matter what happens to your first device.
  • The first time you open chat after updating, you'll need to create a passphrase of at least 10 characters, separate from your UpScrolled password. This is never shared with us.
  • Have questions? Contact support before you update, and we’ll help you before you make the switch.

What stays the same

Chat will mostly work exactly as it does now. You can still reply, edit, react, search conversations, use read receipts, mute and archive chats, and mark messages as unread. Your connections, blocks, and verification status carry on as normal.

Clearing a chat will only remove it from your view, not the other person’s. You can still report a conversation by clicking on report and then describing what happened in the explanation box. Since we can’t read your messages, the content of that conversation isn’t included in the report.

If you lose access

You’ll have three ways to recover access to encrypted chat: your passphrase, a one-time recovery key saved outside the app, or approval from another device you’ve already verified. Device approval happens directly between your devices, without going through our servers.

If you lose all three, we can’t recover your passphrase or recovery key for you. You’ll need to reset chat and start fresh, and your previous chat history will be permanently inaccessible.

That’s an important consequence of putting your conversations under your control. We don’t keep a separate way to read them or restore access to them later. This is zero-knowledge architecture: we don’t hold the keys, so there’s nothing on our side to unlock.

What’s next

We’re starting with end-to-end encryption for one-to-one text messaging. This is phase one. Voice notes, group chats, media sharing, and encrypted voice and video calls are all on the roadmap, as part of UpScrolled’s evolving communication suite.

Protecting the rights and freedoms of our community means protecting your right to a private conversation. End-to-end encryption is one more way we’re reinforcing that. Our way of saying that on UpScrolled, your conversations will always be yours.

Update your UpScrolled app to make sure nobody else has access to your chats, and start encrypted chatting today.
